The Ghana National Association of Private Schools has called for the immediate reopening of schools for all students in the country.
The group represented by its acting President Dr Damasus Tuurosong says now is the right time for schools to resume since the effects of Covid-19 have been mitigated and restrictions are being eased.
Mr Tuurosong adds that studies at home have not been effective since schools closed due to some factors which include the lack of logistics needed to access various learning platforms online.
"The time is ripe in September for us to resume academic work and we have two main reasons for this;
First off, the signs for Covid-19 which was the main reason why schools went down have been decreased and we also see that all other sectors are resuming full operation," he told Daniel Dadzie on the Pulse on Monday.
Schools have since March been closed since the country recorded some cases of Covid-19.
Government said the move was to cut the spread of Covid-19 in the country especially in schools.
Mr Tuurosong was concerned about the challenges in re-inculcating a rigorous academic regimen into the lifestyle of the students after nearly 6 months of no regular academic activity. He believes that if this goes on for much longer, students might lose "appetite for academic work."
"For any learner to be out of the school environment for a good half-year, the risk we run is that by the time they resume academic work, they would've lost appetite for learning, they would have lost much of the learning memory and it will be very difficult to go back and catch up with whatever they have learnt.
"Besides, we are aware that at home, there is nothing effective in terms of learning at that is going on. It needs to be done in order to salvage our educational system. It is important that we return to the classroom and do effective [teaching]," he added.
