A fire has destroyed nine of the 17 rooms at the family home of the late Tamale Central Member of Parliament, Murtala Mohammed, in Tamale.
The blaze broke out on Wednesday, August 5, prompting a swift response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
According to the Northern Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, ADO I Hudu Baba, the Service received a distress call at 3:29 p.m., and firefighters arrived at the scene eight minutes later at 3:37 p.m.
Speaking to Accra-based Channel One News, ADO I Hudu Baba said firefighters rescued two schoolchildren who had become trapped in one of the rooms before bringing the fire under control.
He noted that while the fire destroyed nine rooms in the building, efforts by the firefighters prevented it from spreading to the remaining sections of the house.
The GNFS has since launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and assess the full extent of the damage.
Murtala Mohammed was among the eight people who lost their lives in the military helicopter crash in the Adansi area of the Ashanti Region on August 6, 2025.
The victims were travelling from Accra to the Ashanti Region on an official assignment when the helicopter crashed.
The accident claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Vice Chairman Dr Samuel Sarpong, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, and three military crew members.
