The Ghana Education Service (GES) has kicked against cancelling the Teacher Licensure exam.
The Service says cancelling the exam will reduce professionalism in the teaching profession.
"If this happens, then we will still keep our teachers below international standards but we have to make every effort to bring them at par with their counterparts elsewhere," Director of GES, Prof. Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa said.
This comes at the back of the NDCs promise to cancel the Teachers Licensure exam if given the nod in the upcoming election.
Running mate to the NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama at the launch of the party's manifesto explained that the move is intended to improve the educational system in the country.
Prof Naana Opoku Agyemang said quality education depends on having good teachers, well-trained teachers, as well as having enough of them.
"So we will abolish the mandatory national service and teacher licensure examination for graduate teachers and restore the automatic employment of newly trained teachers to improve the teacher-student ratio across the country while we consider those who have study via distance,” she said.
However, Prof. Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa does not believe cancelling the exam will help the profession.
He said the exam has been the reason why teachers have exercised maximum professionalism in their field of work.
He added that teachers writing the exam has been the standard practice in various countries that have advanced in education as well as the teaching profession.
