The Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Boamah Otokunor has advised the Director of Elections for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Evans Nimako to be accurate when referencing election Constitutional Instruments (C.I) and Laws.
According to him, Mr. Nimako should know better than to reference an archaic Constitutional Instrument to defend a standing issue of concern.
His statement comes at a time where the Electoral Commission is under heavy criticism for publishing the details of 17 million registered voters online ahead of the December 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
The information which caught media attention had people condemning and commending the Electoral Commission.
But in an interview with JoyNews' Evans Mensah, Mr. Nimako tried to defend the situation, arguing that there were laws to defend the 'mishappening'.
“There is a Law, the C.I 91, regulation 27(3) which says after the register has been certified, it shall be published in a manner determined by the Commission and shall replace any existing voters’ register," he said.
However, Mr. Otokunor disagrees.
Taking his turn on the show, the outspoken politician said the law was false since according to him, that law was contested in 2016.
“C. I 91 is no more a Law. You are the Director of Elections, don’t you know it's no longer a Law?
"We have C.I 126 and C.I 127. This election is currently being governed by C.I 126," he said.
According to Mr. Otokunor, this is not the level of transparency the NDC requested from the EC.
“When you decide to put the register out, you don’t put certain portions of the register out, What was released was the voter’s reference list.
"It has the age of the individuals who are registered and where they fall on the register.
"Any serious-minded electoral official will not release a register with that information. It has data protection issues,” Mr. Otokunor told Evans Mensah.
The Deputy General Secretary of the NDC then alleged that the situation was all a ploy by the EC and the NPP to rig the December 7 election.
Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission is yet to address the matter as to whether the publication of the information was deliberate or not.
