A key campaign team member of former presidential aspirant Hon. Kennedy Agyapong has rejected suggestions that he should pursue a breakaway political path following his defeat in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) recent presidential primaries.
In a Facebook post on Friday, February 13, Joojo Rocky Obeng said the idea of a “third force” is “politically ridiculous and completely off-limits” to him and should be rejected by anyone who genuinely supported Hon. Ken’s bid to be on the NPP ticket. The remarks come after the NPP elected former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as its flagbearer for the 2028 general elections in a nationwide primary held on 31 January 2026, where Dr Bawumia secured the party’s presidential nomination with 56.48% of the vote, beating Mr Agyapong and other contenders.
Mr Obeng, a former Western North Regional Minister, argued that it is unrealistic to think Hon. Ken could win a national election outside the framework of either the NPP or a major party like the National Democratic Congress.
“I find it awfully interesting the idea that Hon Ken can win a national election without the strength of either our party, NPP, or a National Party like the NDC. That is an overstretch — going by our recent history and precedents in the fourth republic,” he wrote.
He questioned the logic of waiting until after the primaries to suggest alternatives to the NPP platform, noting that Hon. Ken’s decision to seek the flagbearership of the NPP was itself a “candid admission” that running on the party’s ticket is “the most feasible option to winning any Presidential Elections in Ghana.”
Mr Obeng urged supporters to give the party space to reflect on its internal electoral reforms following the primaries, highlighting that there is a need to address the “excesses and the regrettable utterances that came with our primaries” as a matter of priority.
“Everyone, including our flagbearer knows that we need to cleanse ourselves from the excesses and the regrettable utterances that came with our primaries. Those excesses & utterances cut very deep. And must receive highest priority,” he wrote, adding that indulging in suggestions of a breakaway faction could harm the party’s reconciliation efforts.
He reiterated that defeat is painful, but a breakaway “third force” must not be considered.
“What is on the table now is NDC’s MESS of the Cocoa sector and the bad treatment they’ve put millions of Cocoa Farmers through this Cocoa season. I shall be back on this subject after we have secured better conditions for the Cocoa farmer. Thank you!” Mr Obeng concluded.
