Where the makeup world was once infiltrated with sharp brows, harsh contour and full coverage makeup, we are now witnessing an opposite effect where the term ‘soft glam’ has made its way to Instagram, YouTube and everything in between.
Makeup artists, from amateur to renowned celebrities, are demonstrating techniques that emphasise the face, rather than change it.
Smooth, radiant and airbrushed skin is the new trend and although soft glam makeup does not always have to focus on neutral colours, the blending and aesthetic integration of the shades are what create the ‘soft’ effect.
The common misconception is that soft glam cannot be achieved with full coverage makeup but this is not true as it all depends on the technique and quality of products used.
Soft glam makeup is free of harsh lines and strong differentiations in colour and texture.
While it does take some practice and patience to achieve this look, it is definitely doable.
We explain exactly how this is possible, with product recommendations to guide you through this process. Plus, check out this step-by-step tutorial by makeup artist Lisa Caldognetto for failsafe results...
Prep your skin
Good skin leads to great makeup. A thoroughly cleansed, toned and moisturised face is the best (and to be honest, only) way to begin your makeup routine.
While some people can just take it from here, the rest of us need to take that extra step and priming is the best way to go about it. The best multi-tasking primer and all-around classic is the Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base, a priming moisturiser that all skin types can benefit from.
It smooths and preps the skin so that make-up can glide on seamlessly, leaving a naturally radiant finish. Alternatively, you can opt for a soft matte effect with the Fenty Pro Filt’r Mattifying Primer. Primers are essential in refining the look of pores to achieve a more polished look.
Use the correct tools
Unfortunately, not all brushes are made the same and a low-quality brush can leave your makeup looking streaky and unblended. The Morphe Pro Deluxe Buffer Brush is perfect for applying foundation as the soft, dense bristles evenly distribute the perfect amount of product to create an even finish.
In addition, thicker products like concealer work better with sponges than brushes so it is important to find a balance between the two tools.
As the skin under the eye is more delicate, it may be more helpful to use a small sponges such as the Revolution Conceal & Fix Setting sponges, to dab the product on gently.
Set your face as you go along
If you are focusing on achieving a naturally radiant look, you may find your face becomes oilier before you have completed the look.
In this instance, it is important to set your face as you go along without completely mattifying it. Gently dusting a translucent powder in the necessary areas without interfering with the shades and tones already present on your face is key.
The Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder is perfect for this and doesn’t give flashback.
Use a setting spray
A setting spray is arguably the most important step in finalising your soft glam look. The correct setting spray will merge all of the layers of make-up together and give your face dimension.
The Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist hydrates your skin in the process and provides a flawless finish. To ensure your look lasts all day, you can go over this at the end with the Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray.
Lastly, be patient. Take time to map out your face and use a very precise, light hand to trace and accentuate your features.
You should be spending the longest amount of time blending, as gently as possible. Experiment with make-up of different textures such as balms, liquids and powders and never stick to one category as this will give your face dimension.
