MP-elect for the Suame Constituency has said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) did not envisage losing a relatively high number of parliamentary seats as they did in the just-ended polls.
Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu said the outcome of the 2020 parliamentary elections “is going to make work [in parliament] herculean.”
“By and large, it may have a negative impact on the conducting of business in Parliament,” he said.
His comments come after the NPP lost about 33 of its parliamentary seats to the NDC and one independent candidate, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, formerly of the NPP.
According to Mr Kyei Mensah Bonsu, the NPP had expected to maintain their majority in parliament with about 150 seats at the very least.
Nonetheless, he is optimistic that this outcome will enable both parties to learn to collaborate in parliament.
He added that both parties will work together to elect a new Speaker who has the interest of all Ghanaians at heart.
“We may have a Speaker come from the opposition party who really is for the good of democratic governance, and we could live with that. But if we have a Speaker who is entrenched on his own party line, it becomes difficult to run a government,” he said.
