The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has called on the Ghana Police Service to investigate death threats received by freelance investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni.
The threats against Manasseh's life came after an opinion piece written by the journalist on the outcome of 2020 elections with the headline 'ERRORtoral Commission and Akufo- Addo’s coup d’état' which got a political fanatic aggrieved.
The article discussed the alleged anomalies with the Techiman South parliamentary results and the denial of the people of Santrokfi, Akpafu, Lolobi and Likpe (SALL) areas to vote for a parliamentary representative.
The threat was sent in an email to him on Christmas day, a day after the article was published
According to GJA, "this is the latest of a series of death threats issued against Manasseh in the past few years. But the venom in the latest death notice served on him via email is poisonous enough to snuff life, and for which reason the GJA wishes to sound the alarm bell for all to respond."
The Association then condemned the act, describing it as a 'barbaric act' which must be to death by getting to the bottom of it and dealing with the culprit decisively.”
The GJA further called on the Ghana Police Service to provide adequate security to Mr Azure Awuni and other journalists across the country who have received death threats.
“In the regard of the foregoing, we call on the Ghana Police Service to investigate, arrest and prosecute the suspect as swiftly and decisively as possible.”
The GJA also called on the President, the National Peace Council, Political parties, Civil Society Organisations, religious organisations and all well-meaning Ghanaians to roundly condemn the death threats issued against Manasseh and other journalists in the country.
GJA then urged media partners, both national and international, including the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) and Rapporteur San Frontier (Reporters Without Borders) to condemn the death threats against journalists in Ghana.
