Director of Policy Advocacy and Policy Engagement at CDD-Ghana has urged President Akufo-Addo to limit the number of ministers in his second term of office.
Dr Kojo Pumpuni Asante explained that having a large number of politicians in a ministry tends to compound the already existing challenges of bureaucracy in the government agencies and also reduces the numbers in Parliament.
"Often what happens is that when you have too many politicians in a ministry, it creates even more problems. It either can politicise the bureaucracy and if they are too big, it means that you're going to take more people from Parliament and the Parliamentary agenda suffers apart from the cost associated with it," he told Ayisha Ibrahim on JoyNews' PM Express.
The comment comes ahead of President Akufo-Addo's release of new ministers for his second term.
Ahead of the anticipated nominations, governance experts who have been speaking to JoyNews say there must be a radical change in terms of how the President executes his mandate starting with his appointees.
They have also called on him to deploy his most efficient appointees while cutting down on the number of ministers in government.
"In bringing in new ministers, for sure, we can't have 125. I think that argument has been proven and the President has been proven wrong on his argument of having more numbers in government," Dr Pumpuni said.
Adding his voice to the conversation, Co-chair of the Citizens Movement, Edem Senanu said President Akufo-Addo must consider other appointees even if it means making appointments outside his party.
"I think that the President clearly needs to identify what I call the strikers; those with a track record of execution even if they are outside his party, family and friends circle. Loyalty should not be the value that is put above hard work, integrity and competency. We just need the right strikers at the places to get the right results," Mr Senanu said.
