The Sanitation Minister-designate, Cecilia Abena Dapaah has commended President Akufo-Addo for making a bold declaration in wanting to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa.
According to her, the President did not only say he was going to make only Accra the cleanest city but rather the whole country needs to be clean.
"On the President’s declaration, I think like I want to reiterate and emphasise that it’s a very bold declaration and we need all of us. The motto is 'Keep Ghana Clean'. The answer is play your part."
Addressing some issues of the country's sanitation situation at her vetting by Parliament's Appointment Committee Tuesday, Madam Dapaah said it is the responsibility of the stakeholders and key players to do their job.
This was after the North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, shared pictures taken early in the morning to the Committee and Minister-designate on the sanitation situation on the ground.
"As Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has exhibited, we also do monitoring around. I’ll not doubt all these pictures and I would say we are doing our best to deal with it," she said.
Although the President is on a quest to keep the country clean and make Accra the cleanest city in Africa, Madam Dapaah also acknowledged that the ministry has been bedevilled with some challenges.
In August 2020, the sanitation minister-designate highlighted that the government’s promise to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa by 2020 was 85% complete.
She said that those monitoring are always on the field but one challenege has been dealing with solid waste.
"That is why we need this huge pillar of sanitation authority to help strategise and direct affairs especially in the Central Business Districts. They do have a huge problem," the former Aviation Minister said.
She added that another challenge they face is the working schedule of the sanitation monitors.
This, she said the ministry is negotiating to motivate and engage sanitation monitors to add Sundays to their working days.
"They would give excuses for logistics. We’ve taken note of their challenges. And I’m sure that very soon we’d find long-lasting, sustainable solutions to them," she added.
The former Bantama MP expressed thanked the contractors for giving their all in an effort to solve the sanitation crisis in the country.
