President Akufo-Addo has indicated that former Auditor-General, Daniel Domelevo engaged in intolerable conduct during his time in office.
This forms part of attempts by the Presidency to clear the air on allegations that the NPP government and the Audit Service Board targeted Mr. Domelevo because his work was embarrassing the Akufo-Addo-led government.
A cross-section of the public backed by some Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), had noted that state institutions like the Auditor-General’s Department play a significant role in fighting corruption, therefore, asking the leaders of these institutions to go on ‘unrealistic’ leave or retirement, questions the President's much-touted anti-corruption tagline.
But President Akufo-Addo in a 21-paged letter signed by his Executive Secretary, Nana Asante Bediatuo said the CSOs have not been fair in their assertions.
“It is noteworthy that nary a sound of caution or condemnation was heard from you or your colleagues in civil society when Mr. Domelevo was using his office to engage in such unacceptable and unconscionable conduct. Indeed, a less charitable perspective would be that this was a patent abuse of office. Yet, there was no chatter from our friends of Civil Society,” part of the letter read.
The clarification comes on the back of claims by the CSOs that, President Akufo-Addo should not have directed the then Auditor-General to proceed on leave when he has been assigned a special duty to investigate the payment of $1million to Kroll and Associates Limited by Senior Minister Yaw Osafo.
But the statement from the Presidency maintains that “the narrative of the discussion focuses on unfounded allegations” as the government had at most times supported the work of Mr. Domelevo as he can attest to that.
