Former Kumasi Asante Kotoko SC coach, Abdul Razak, reveals that Ramadan should not be a basis for Muslim players to underperform.
The veteran coach believes during the period when there is less eating during the day, most players who observe the Holy period are able to repeat the high level of performances they give everyday.
The past days has raised discussions about the 'preferential treatment' that need to be offered to Muslim players after allegations came in that Asante Kotoko coach Mariano Barreto has declined granting his players who are observing Ramadan a relaxed training schedule.
The Porcupines through a tweet from the acting Communications Manager David Obeng Nyarko came out to rubbish such reports.
"Fellow warriors, kindly disregard the wicked lies being purported that our Muslim players met with Coach Barreto in relation to Ramadan and training to which the Coach made certain pronouncement.
Fake stories like these are just ploys to get us distracted and bring down our progress. Let’s please stay focused," he wrote on Facebook.
Abdul Razak, who is a former player of the Porcupines says from his experience, Ramadan must rather bolster players performance.
“Some of our local coaches during our playing days in Ghana understood difficulties of players who are Muslims during Ramadan and gave us options to train once daily but the expatriates did not give us that liberty. I still worked hard to achieve my goals. Ramadan fasting did not affect my performance in any way but rather boosted it. Most Muslim players can confirm better output during Ramadan ” he told Nhyira 104.5fm.
Kotoko face Great Olympics at the Accra Sports stadium in a top of the table clash on Friday.
