The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is considering reintroducing the Department of Scientific Instrumentation to take care of non-functional equipment.
It comes at the back of a call by the Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation for a specialised body under the CSIR to repair non-functioning equipment, which is becoming an albatross in the efficient operations of the Council.
The department was merged with the Institute of Industrial Research but was said to have lost its function with time.
The Council has therefore been sourcing external experts for capacity building and repair works.
Speaking during a familiarisation tour of the CSIR, Dr Kwaku Afriyie observed Ghana is losing lots of money as a result.
Dr Afriyie says the department will be responsible for equipment management at the Council and other medical fields.
“We have to bring back. We have much non-functioning equipment littered all over the place because of sometimes a small part.
“Ghana is losing so much and an entity like that will take care of all those things,” he said.
