The National Media Commission (NMC) has described as wrongful, the treatment meted out to Citi FM’s journalist, Caleb Kudah by operatives of the Ministry of National Security on Tuesday May 11.
The NMC also condemned the subsequent invasion of the premises of Citi FM/TV.
This was contained in a press release signed by the Executive Secretary, George Sarpong, dated June 2, that announced the outcome of settlement meetings it had under the Coordinated Mechanism for the Safety of Journalists.
After the incident, Management of Citi FM/TV petitioned the NMC to investigate the alleged assault of Caleb Kudah and the invasion of its premises.
According to the NMC, “all institutions in a democratic state must act within the law and adopt approaches that reflect democratic values.”
The Commission commended actions taken by the Ministry of National Security saying it, “represented a renewed commitment to democratic approaches to the management of security in the nation.”
The Commission further called for the review of laws relating to security and media especially those about prohibited areas within the context of the 1992 Constitution.
The NMC also called on journalists to exercise greater care and circumspection when undertaking assignments that could put them in harms’ way in order to ensure their safety.
“The commission is of the view that in the national interest and the strengthening of democracy, there must be regular orientation programmes for both the media and security operatives to recognise and appreciate each other’s role,” it concluded.
