Organised labour says it’s satisfied with the six percent increment in the national minimum daily wage in the face of the global pandemic.
The National Tripartite Committee yesterday increased the national daily minimum wage to ¢12.53 pesewas, which is a 6% increment on the 2020 figure of ¢11.82 pesewas.
Speaking to Joy News in an interview, Secretary General of the TUC Dr. Yaw Baah says even though they welcome the increment, it is inadequate.
“Of course we were expecting more, we wished we could have gotten more. The figure was increased from 11.82 so from 11.82 we now have 12.53 which is 6 percent increase but we would have loved to have higher than this but all the factors that I have mentioned we couldn’t get what we wanted,” he said.
"We just finished the negotiation one hour ago so we are yet to see how members will react to this obviously 12.53 is definatly not adequate for a family of four. Even the employee who is the centre of all these, 12.53 is definitely not enough," he added.
General Secretary of the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union, Solomon Kotei, said those whose salaries are above the minimum wage should equally expect knock off effect on their monies from their employers.
“In a right direction, looking at the Covid impact I think the government can do more about this.
For workers above the minimum wage, it need to be calculated, there should be a calculation upwards.”
