Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Peter Mac Manu, has disclosed that some Members of Parliament have not been able to repay monies they received from their financiers to fund their election campaigns.
He made the revelation on JoyNews' Newsfile on Saturday, while contributing to the discussion on illicit funding by political parties in the country.
"People are spending money and ultimately when power comes to them, they have to pay back. I know some MPs who are still indebted to their financiers one way or the other."
He told host, Samson Lardy Anyenini: "If they don't find contracts, or corrupt means to pay them back, they are not going to be steady working in Parliament. They will be sitting in Parliament but their minds will be elsewhere."
Mr Mac Manu therefore urged that "we must find a way of reducing cost of election in this country."
A study by the Centre for Democratic Development Ghana (CDD) revealed that nine individuals who are allegedly engaged in illicit activities, funded some political parties in the 2020 elections.
These activities include; illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, illegal oil distribution, and fraudulent business.
The financiers are said to have funded the campaign with the aim of making friends to ensure the sustenance of their businesses should the recipient of the funds win the polls.
Meanwhile, Mr Mac Manu has commended the CDD for its investigations on an issue impeding Ghana's victory over corruption.
"It (illicit funding) is not the best. It is not good for our democracy. That is why I commend CDD for this project," he said.
