Today, March 22, has been earmarked to commemorate World Water Day.
The day celebrated annually since 1993 seeks to create awareness on potable drinking water globally.
A core focus of World Water Day is to inspire action towards Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030. The theme for World Water Day 2022 is “Groundwater - making the invisible visible”.
Social media users have taken to Twitter to elevate the campaign on the need for every part of the world have access to good drinking water.
Ghanaian forward, Daniel Kofi Kyere, took to Instagram to join the campaign. In the post, he said "Water is a human right."
According to the UN World Water Development Report 2022, accounting for approximately 99% of all liquid freshwater on Earth, groundwater has the potential to provide societies with tremendous social, economic and environmental benefits and opportunities.
"Groundwater already provides half of the volume of water withdrawn for domestic use by the global population, including the drinking water for the vast majority of the rural population who do not get their water delivered to them via public or private supply systems, and around 25% of all water withdrawn for irrigation."
However, the report noted that the natural resource is undervalued, mismanaged and even abused.
