Member of Parliament for Pru West, Stephen Jalulah has said that he and his colleagues who are reported to have received double salaries have refunded the amounts involved.

The others are; Sylvester Tetteh of Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfro, MP for Kintampo South, Alexander Gyan and the MP for Salaga North, Alhassan Iddi.

Per a release by the Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA), the MPs collected salaries as Chief Executive Officers of state institutions and District Chief Executives, which are their previous positions as well as that of an MP and failed to refund the overpaid salaries to state coffers.

Mr. Stephen Jalulah, who was also implicated, in an interview with JoyNews on Tuesday, stressed that they refunded the monies paid to them long ago.

The Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways emphasised that the MPs through their contacts at the Controller and Accountant Generals Department informed the Controller’s office of the anomaly as soon as they detected it.

“We noticed the [double payment] and we came together and decided that it should be stopped and eventually it was stopped in August thereabouts. We met in September again as a group and refunded every pesewa of that money that was sent to our accounts because we are Honourable Members of Parliament of the Republic of Ghana.

“As hounourable people we have to be honest and truthful in our dealings that is why we voluntarily returned our monies,” he said on The Pulse on Tuesday.

The Pru West MP added that he is surprised by the accusations from ASEPA.

“I am surprised that ASEPA did this report without contacting the various individuals concerned. I do not know what they are seeking to gain from it,” he stated.

The Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability says the MPs in question cannot be blamed entirely.

“As we speak there are some Members of Parliament who were former DCEs whose accounts still kept recording payment of salaries as DCEs and also as MPs and you could see from the document that the Auditor General has asked them to refund them.

“It is very difficult to blame the MPs involved.”
