I’m confident the UK-Ghana relationship will continue to grow stronger – Harriet Thompson

Harriet Thompson, British High Commissioner

British High Commissioner to Ghana Harriet Thompson says she is assured that the relationship between Ghana and the United Kingdom will continue to get better, even after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

According to her, the two countries – under the leadership of King Charles III – will consolidate and deepen their bilateral ties.

She told Emefa Apawu in an interview that considering the friendship between the new monarch, President Akufo-Addo and the Asantehene Otrumfuo Osei Tutu II, she is very confident the two countries can enhance their mutual benefits going forward.

“I am very sure that the relationship between the UK and Ghana will continue to grow from strength to strength. King Charles as Prince Charles last visited Ghana only very recently in 2019.

“He’s spoken to the President already by phone before the funeral; he’s spoken also to the Asantehene with whom he holds a long-standing personal friendship. So, I am very confident our relationship will continue to grow strong,” she stated.

Meanwhile, she urged people to be wary of their expectations of the new monarch, King Charles III, saying things may not be the same under his leadership as it was under the late Queen.

This, she said, is because King Charles III is a different person.

“However, I do think that he would bring his own humanity, he would bring his own keen interest in the world and in the people of the world to that position. And although he has been a global figure throughout the whole of his life, it’s not in the same way as the Queen.

“I think we would see that change, people will come to know King Charles better than they do currently and come to see that in his personality as well.”
