The newly-appointed acting Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Dr Eric Nkansah, has called on stakeholders to collaborate more and work with him to champion the welfare of teachers in the country.

He said he is focused on materialising the president’s vision of transforming the education sector, something he alone cannot achieve without the help of key stakeholders.

“You are all my colleagues. We are coming to work together to ensure that, at the end of the day, we achieve this kind of outcome.

"But I also know that in achieving such an outcome, you will need to - as a matter of urgency - create enabling environment for the teacher.

So coming into office, I am clear in my mind that the teachers’ welfare needs to be attended to” he said after some teacher groups paid courtesy calls on him.

Dr Eric Nkansah is set to fully assume duty this week as the acting Director-General of GES.

The government appointee is facing stiff opposition from the National Council of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), which has given an ultimatum of November 4, 2022, for the president to revoke his appointment.

The National Association of Graduate Teachers has also backed the call, saying the new GES boss is not a professional teacher and not competent for the role.

But the Teachers Forum, an association of teachers drawn largely from the Ashanti region, disagrees with this position.

During a courtesy call on Dr Nkansah, the president of the group, Michael Mensah, urged all teacher groups to support the appointee.

“We want the teaching fraternity here in the country to come together for all of us to rally our support behind him,” he urged.

Dr Eric Nkansah noted that after a series of engagements with various stakeholders and interest groups, a comprehensive plan will be mapped out to improve the education sector.
