There was a near eruption of violence at the National Democratic Congress (NDC) election in Tamale over the weekend after one of the contestants rejected the results.
Supporters of Wumbie Godfred who contested for the chairmanship position disputed the results, citing irregularities.
The supporters tried to go through the barricade that was mounted to secure the counting area, forcing the Electoral Commission (EC) to halt the process.
Ali Adolf John secured 247 votes to beat Wumbie Godfred who got 236 votes.
The election had ended peacefully and the counting process was completed with only the declaration to be made.
While the EC was preparing to declare the result, the supporters of Wumbie Godfried started jubilating but it was cut short when supporters of Ali Adolf also started jubilating.
At this point, Wumbie Godfred began protesting that he had won and was being cheated.
"I have won the elections, I have my results and I will not call for a recount," he said.
Mr. Wumbie questioned why he had not been declared the winner. He said he would call for the annulment of the results.
