Researchers from ISSER, led by Dr. Simon Bawakyillenuo, have successfully demonstrated the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of modern energy cooking services, particularly e-cooking.
Despite initial perceptions of eCooking being expensive, Dr. Bawakyillenuo revealed that the electric pressure cooker's use of electricity makes it a cost-effective option.
To transition households from traditional solid fuels, ISSER initiated the Modern Energy Cooking Services (MECS) Project in 2020, exploring cooking behaviors and energy services dynamics in Ghana.
Phase II, supported by the World Bank, focused on empirically showcasing the benefits of modern energy cooking, employing electricity, charcoal, and LPG for various dishes.
KEY FINDINGS: -
LPG proved the most expensive option, while LPG and charcoal emitted CO and PM2.5. E-cook technologies showed zero emissions, albeit with slightly longer cooking times.
RECOMMENDATIONS: -
- Demystify the belief that 'e-cooking is too expensive' through practical education and awareness campaigns.
- Promote e-cooking akin to LPG and maintain affordable electricity tariffs to encourage adoption.
- Prevent substandard products in the market through vigilant measures.
These findings emphasize the economic advantages of embracing eCooking and underscore the need for a shift in perception through targeted education and awareness initiatives.
