The President's nominee for Information Minister, Fatimatu Abubakar, has staunchly opposed suggestions for the abolishing or amalgamation of the Information Ministry and the Ministry of Communications.
At her vetting before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Friday, March 8th, Fatimatu Abubakar reiterated the importance of maintaining and resourcing the Information Ministry as an independent entity.
She emphasised that the Ministry is best equipped to fulfill vital state functions and should remain separate from the Ministry of Communications.
Mrs. Abubakar pointed out previous untold challenges when the two ministries were merged, highlighting the difficulties encountered by various agencies operating under the merged entity.
In light of this, Mrs. Abubakar urged Ghanaians to advocate for increased resource allocation to the Information Ministry to enable it to effectively carry out its mandate, rather than advocating for its abolition.
“If anything, I am of the view that we should advocate for more allocation and let people know the importance of the ministry. When the ministry was merged at some point in time with the Communications Ministry, if you had been to the Ministry of Information building or the ISD buildings as we have today, the evidence of the struggles of the various agencies under the ministry was not something that we could even have words to explain.”
“It pays that we have a sector ministry that is minded, that despite the fact that the key entities under the ministry are not income-generating, they play a public duty and we need to pay attention to them, it has improved the fortunes under the ministry,” she added.
