Ebenezer Oklitey Teye Larbi, Member of Parliament for Lower Manya Krobo, has voiced concerns over what he perceives as a lack of dedication among members of the Majority Caucus in Parliament towards legislative matters.
According to him, many members of the Majority Caucus have prioritised campaign activities for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, over parliamentary duties.
Addressing the issue on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, June 19, Oklitey Teye Larbi criticized the absenteeism of Majority Caucus members, noting that their absence undermines the efficiency and effectiveness of parliamentary proceedings.
He lamented that such a stance from the Majority side serves as a discouragement to the Minority Caucus, affecting the overall productivity of the legislative body.
The MP emphasised the importance of parliamentarians fulfilling their legislative responsibilities diligently, irrespective of political campaigns.
He urged his colleagues in the Majority Caucus to prioritise their duties in Parliament to ensure that the business of the House proceeds smoothly and that legislative decisions are made in the best interests of the nation.
“It is not good for our image. As if we are joking here. And if the government doesn’t have any business for us to do, then we should adjourn sine die so that we go home and continue because, as I speak to you, most of our colleagues are following the Vice President left, right, and centre. We also have to go and campaign. We cannot be here doing government business while they go out there and campaign."
“We also want to follow our flagbearer. It is a fact, and it is true that our colleagues are following the Vice President and that is the reason why some of them are not here. My point is that if it is about the campaign, then let’s just adjourn sine die so that we all go and campaign because they are not showing commitment towards business in this House," he stated.
