Vice President, Mahamudu Bawumia says the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will leverage the private sector's capabilities to enhance infrastructure development in Ghana.
This forms part of his vision for involving private enterprises in the nation’s infrastructural projects.
The NPP flagbearer said this during the unveiling of the NPP’s manifesto on Sunday, ahead of the 2024 elections.
“In the last eight years, we have been deliberate in empowering Ghanaian contractors to undertake many major infrastructural projects that would otherwise have gone to foreign contractors,” Bawumia stated.
He highlighted the importance of private sector participation in building and managing critical infrastructure, such as children's hostels, housing, and schools, which the government can rent or lease with an option to own.
Dr. Bawumia also addressed the significant demand for road construction, noting that it has historically placed a substantial burden on the national budget.
He proposed making it more attractive for the private sector to finance, construct, manage, and maintain roads through Public-Private Partnership (PPP) concessions.
"The demand for roads construction is massive, and this has historically placed a huge burden on the budget. I will make it more attractive for the private sector to also finance construction management and maintenance of roads through PPP concessions."
