Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has revealed that Ukraine’s efforts have saved 20 million people from hunger and provided food for 400 million people across 100 countries, even as the nation battles the impact of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
Addressing a question posed by JoyNews’ Raymond Acquah at the 3rd International Summit on Food Security held in Kyiv, Ukraine, Zelensky highlighted the deliberate tactics used by Russia to disrupt global food supplies.
He noted that the invasion began with the calculated blockade of Ukrainian ports.
“They knew what they were doing. The issue of prices is an issue of stability, and that’s why it is crucial to gather and support food security,” he said.
The conflict has caused significant damage to Ukraine’s agricultural infrastructure, with 321 sites affected, including 20 civilian ships and 60 food installations.
These disruptions have led to soaring food prices in countries like Egypt and Nigeria.
Zelensky emphasized that the pace at which these challenges are resolved depends heavily on clearing Ukrainian lands of landmines.
Despite the hardships, Zelensky expressed gratitude to Ukrainian farmers who continue to work under dangerous conditions to feed the world.
“I am grateful to the farmers who are still working to feed the world,” he said.
The president also called on the international community to reject colonial ambitions and ensure Russia does not succeed in its aggression.
“We should not permit Russia or anyone else with a colonial mentality and ambition to succeed,” he added.
