The police in Tema Monday foiled a robbery operation at the Electricity Company Cash Collection Point at Ashaiman roundabout by shooting and wounding two suspected armed robbers.
The robbers were identified as Osumanu Mohammed, 25, a Togolese and Mohammed Abukari, 25, from Paga in the Upper East Region.
An accomplice named only as Abdulai escaped.
The police seized an Opel Vectra Salon Car (GW 3644 U) used in the operation, a locally manufactured pistol, a bullet proof vest in which was concealed pieces of paper with Arabic inscriptions, rings and amulets.
Briefing the press, ACP Augustine Gyenning, Tema Regional Police Commander, said this was the second time in a month that robbers had attacked the ECG office.
He said following a tip off that some armed robbers were planning to attack the place when the staff were getting ready to send money to the bank, police were detailed to lay ambush at about 8.30 a.m.
ACP Gyening said an hour later the three men arrived in the saloon car.
After communicating with the other persons on a mo¬bile phone, Abdulai, the driver got out of the car and moved towards the ECG cash point which was crowded with customers.
The Police Commander said after a while, Abdulai beckoned the others who were in the car to join him.
It was at this point that police sprung a surprise by shooting into the air to confuse them.
He said Abdulai, bolted while the two who took to their heels were arrested.
The Regional Police Commander said, police suspected that some employees of the ECG are in league with the robbers and therefore advised the company to check the background of potential employees.
