The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) has issued a statement in response to allegations of malfeasance made by Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Samuel Nartey George.
The allegations, which have since gone viral on social media, involve activities at the Akom Axle Load Station in the Ashanti Region.
The GHA refuted claims presented by the MP on Accra-based TV3, asserting that the information shared was not entirely accurate and led to a misrepresentation of the events.
The authority emphasized the primary purpose of its Axle Load Control Programme, which is to prevent the deterioration of trunk roads caused by overloading, rather than generating revenue.
According to the GHA, discrepancies were observed in financial returns from the Akom Axle Load Station during audits conducted between May and June 2024. Investigations revealed evidence of edited software data and fraudulent deletions aimed at concealing the discrepancies.
Enhanced supervision and reinforced protocols have since been introduced to safeguard operational integrity.
The GHA clarified that the staff member involved, who was initially a cashier before being promoted to Supervisor, was not dismissed. Her six-month contract ended on November 6, 2024, and while she reapplied for her position, she has yet to respond to queries regarding the alleged malfeasance.
The GHA reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy towards corruption, noting that officers found guilty of misconduct have been interdicted or dismissed.
Investigations into the Akom Axle Load Station have been referred to the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) and are currently with the Office of the Attorney General for further action.
In closing, the GHA assured the public of its commitment to maintaining professional standards and holding accountable any staff found guilty of wrongdoing.
