The festive season is a time for joy, togetherness, and celebration, and health experts caution Ghanaians to be mindful of the hidden risks of overindulgence during the holidays.
Dietician Nicholas Lartey has raised concerns about the rising cases of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity, which are often linked to excessive consumption of sugary and high-calorie foods during this period.
He explained to JoyNews that some holiday habits, such as diluting carbonated drinks to reduce their sugar content, offer little benefit in mitigating their impact on the body.
"Diluting sugary drinks does not significantly reduce the risks associated with their consumption," he stated, emphasising that moderation is key.
He also urged Ghanaians to adopt healthier practices, including controlling portion sizes and incorporating more vegetables into their meals.
"The festive season doesn't have to be unhealthy, adding more vegetables to your meals can make a big difference," he advised.
As the Yuletide celebrations continue, experts encourage the public to enjoy responsibly and prioritise their health.
