A death dealing bush fire has ravaged a yam barn in Tapon-Akura, Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region, leaving the farmer with a staggering loss of 1,000 tubers of yams.
Mr Tapon Nchaame, the affected farmer revealed to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the fire was deliberately set to his yam barn, despite his efforts to create fire belts around his farm.
The GNA team who visited the farm witnessed how the blaze had destroyed everything, leaving the farmer not being able to salvage a single tuber.
Mr Nchaame said the incident was not an isolated one, because bushfires had become an annual occurrence during the harmattan season in the community and Municipality.
The farmer is urgently calling on the Police and National Fire Service to take swift action against those responsible for setting fires in bushes.
He advocated for their prosecution to serve as a deterrent to others, emphasising the need for increased awareness and enforcement of measures to prevent bush fires and protect farmers.
