Senior Research Analyst at CDD-Ghana, Rhoda Osei-Afful, has called for urgent and decisive measures to tackle illegal mining, known as galamsey, in Ghana.
She stressed that the country has witnessed enough rhetoric on the issue and that it is time for authorities to implement concrete actions to eradicate the menace.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile programme on Saturday, February 1, Rhoda Osei-Afful insisted that efforts to combat galamsey must go beyond mere promises.
“We want to see that there is swift action, comprehensive and not just words. We want a fight that can be sustained and end this menace,” she stated.
Madam Osei-Afful highlighted that Ghana’s natural resources, particularly its water bodies and farmlands, continue to suffer destruction due to illegal mining activities.
She argued that without sustained and well-coordinated interventions, the country risks long-term damage that could affect future generations.
