The Ghana Gaming Commission has revealed that between 20 and 30 percent of individuals struggling with gambling addiction in the country are women.
A 2023 survey by TGM Research revealed that 41.7 percent of Ghanaians participated in sports betting in the past year, making Ghana one of the top four African countries in betting engagement.
Ghana's gambling industry is growing steadily, with around 25 licensed sports betting operators, 12 online casinos, and 24 physical casinos regulated by the Gaming Commission.
Speaking on the issue during a visit to The Multimedia Group, Commissioner of the Ghana Gaming Commission, Emmanuel Siisi Quainoo, expressed concern over the increasing number of women involved in gambling.

“Gambling is no longer just a male-dominated activity; women are increasingly involved. In fact, between 20% and 30% of addicted gamblers are women. These are individuals we have either banned or who have voluntarily requested self-exclusion,” the Commissioner stated.
He emphasised that the Commission is stepping up efforts to address addiction by engaging psychologists to assist individuals battling gambling-related issues.

“We intend to engage psychologists to assist with rehabilitation efforts of gamblers who are self banned or become addicted.”
The regulator has also announced plans to crack down on betting facilities operating near schools and religious institutions, citing the need to protect vulnerable groups.
The Commission is expected to roll out new public awareness campaigns and counseling programs to help those affected by gambling addiction, including women.
