The Libyan leader, Muamur al-Gaddafi would be crowned King of Kings in Africa next week in a ceremony in Accra by chiefs in West Africa, Chronicle newspaper reports.
The decision, which is alleged to have the full backing of the President of Ghana's National House of Chiefs, Naa Prof. Nabila, is said to have incurred the wrath of some chiefs in Ghana, who claim they are not aware of the decision.
Naa Prof. Nabila would not comment when the paper reached him on his cell phone last Thursday night, because he would be holding a news conference in Accra Friday on the matter. However, his colleague chiefs insisted that they were not consulted before the decision was taken. According to them, Gaddafi is not a traditional chief and therefore they do not see why such a title should be conferred on him.
The Libyan leader is said to be the bankroller of the West Africa Conference of Chiefs, Kings and Sultans, therefore the decision to crown him with that title did not come to many as a surprise.
The Chronicle, however, gathered that in inviting the Libyan leader into the country, Naa Prof. Nabila failed to follow protocol. Even the Government and the Minister of Chieftaincy Affairs, the paper gathered, were unaware about the development as the National President of the Chiefs defied the protocol order and went ahead to invite Mr. Gaddafi to be crowned next week.
Apart from this setback which some chiefs are raising eyebrows over, they also believe that their President was just rewarding the Libya leader for personal reasons.
A consensus was also not reached for Naa Nabila to even speak on their behalf at the just ended AU summit.
A government official who was contacted denied knowledge about Gaddafi's proposed title that is going to be conferred on him in Accra.
