Kweku Asante, host of Fellow Ghanaian on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning, has voiced strong concerns about the growing number of individuals in Ghana who falsely claim academic titles such as 'Doctor' and 'Professor.'
Speaking on the show, Asante described the trend as a “carnival of fake credentials,” driven by shortcuts, vanity, and cash payments to unaccredited institutions and online degree mills.
“This is not applause-worthy. It’s a national embarrassment,” he said. “When you pay for a PhD you didn’t earn, you insult every honest scholar who toiled for it.”
He praised the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) for cracking down on the issue. The Commission has sent letters to several public figures, politicians, and business leaders, demanding proof of their academic titles or risk legal action.
“GTEC’s move is timely and essential,” he stated. “For far too long, fake doctors and professors have gone unchecked, deceiving the public and sometimes endangering lives.”
Asante highlighted the dangers of this deception, particularly in health and politics, where unqualified individuals use fake titles to gain trust, influence decisions, or secure votes without any credible academic background.
He called for the creation of a national academic title registry—a verified database of accredited doctorates and professorships accessible to media houses, employers, churches, and political parties.
“Fellow Ghanaians, this is not an attack on ambition. It’s a stand against fraud,” he concluded.
