Police Ladies had a troubling start to their WAFU B Women’s Champions League Qualifiers on Sunday afternoon.
The Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League champions suffered a 2-1 defeat to Nigerian counterpart Bayelsa Queens in their opening game of the season.
The Nigerian champions set the tone for a great start to the competition after scoring two goals in the opening 65 minutes of the encounter at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium.
Shakirat Moshood scored in the 12th minute before substitute Emem Essien added the second in the 62nd minute.
There was a lifeline for Police Ladies later in the game when captain Mary Berko got onto the scoresheet after Sarah Nyarko had hit the crossbar.
However, that goal wasn’t enough for the Ghanaian side as Bayelsa Queens held onto their lead to secure all three points at the expense of Police Ladies.
Later in the day, Sam Nelly defeated ASKO in the other Group B fixture making Police Ladies next two games crucial for their qualification into the semifinal stage.
The debutants are up against Sam Nelly in their next game on Wednesday, August 27.
Police Ladies are playing in the competition for the first time since the inception of the tournament in 2021, hoping to become the third Ghanaian to win it.
