Police Ladies etched their name into the history books on Friday, August 7, 2026, defeating arch-rivals Army Ladies 1-0 to clinch the maiden Women's KGL Democracy Cup at McDan Park in La.
In a fiercely contested final, the Police Ladies created numerous chances in the first half but struggled to find the breakthrough, leaving the game deadlocked for much of the opening period.
The decisive moment came when a well-weighted through pass split the Army Ladies defence and found Fidus Yakubu, who calmly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper to give Police Ladies the lead before half-time.
The closing stages turned into an end-to-end contest, but Police Ladies held firm to secure the victory and make history as the first team to lift the Women's Democracy Cup trophy.
In the curtain-raiser, Judicial Service defeated Parliament Ladies on penalties in a symbolic exhibition match designed to celebrate unity, gender inclusion and the growing role of women in national development through
The event attracted several high-profile dignitaries, including the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor; the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror; the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo; and other distinguished guests.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, aims to strengthen the relationship between sport and national institutions while promoting women's football in Ghana. It also provides another platform to showcase the rapid growth of the women's game and encourage greater public support for the domestic league.
With two matches on the programme and a celebration of women's football at its heart, Friday's event marked a significant milestone in the continued development and promotion of the women's game in Ghana.
