The National Information Technology Agency (NITA) says it is working with its technical partner, eSolutions, to restore the official Government of Ghana email service, which has been down since early Monday morning.
The State’s .gov.gh email service reportedly went offline around 5:00 a.m. on 25 August and has remained inaccessible, raising concerns among government staff, security analysts, and the public. Some users have speculated about the possibility of a cyberattack, given the sensitive nature of government communications.
Confirming the development to Myjoyonline.com, NITA’s Chief Executive Officer, Mark Oliver Kevor, attributed the disruption to a “technical challenge” and said engineers are working to resolve it.
“There has been a technical challenge which we are addressing with our technology partners,” he said. Asked for a timeline, he added: “Not really. But joint technical teams are working on it.”
The outage has significant implications. Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) that rely on the .gov.gh domain for official correspondence may be forced to fall back on personal or alternative platforms, raising questions about data privacy, service continuity and efficiency. The timing of the incident, in an era of rising cyberthreats in Africa, has fuelled speculation about whether the email system may have been compromised.
Experts warn that prolonged downtime could erode confidence in government digital infrastructure, delay critical policy communication, and leave gaps for misinformation to thrive. It may also trigger calls for stronger investments in cybersecurity, more resilient government IT systems, and transparent communication protocols during such disruptions.
