The Minister of Labour, Jobs and Employment, Dr Abdul Rashid Pelpuo, has called for urgent and decisive action to address the growing threat of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among Ghana’s workforce, describing workplace wellness as both a moral and economic necessity.
Speaking at the Ghana Health and Labour Summit 2025, organised by MentalPulse Africa under the theme “Mobilising Against NCDs: The Role of Workplaces in Safeguarding Employees’ Wellness,” Dr Pelpuo stressed that the health of workers remains the foundation of national productivity.
“The theme for this day, mobilising against non-communicable diseases, the role of workplaces in safeguarding employee well-being, is not just timely, but also a moral and economic necessity,” he stated.
Dr Pelpuo highlighted the launch of the Ghana Workplace Health Incubation and Employee Safeguarding Toolkits by MentalPulse Africa, noting that the initiative will help promote the mental health of workers. He urged stakeholders to “commit resources to promoting and sustaining worker health.”
He underscored the need to strengthen workplace inspections, institute robust safety and health protocols, and enhance compliance and enforcement mechanisms.
The Minister further encouraged employers to invest in human capital development, emphasising that “the most valuable assets are workers, not machines or buildings; hence, true return on investment lies in sustained health and commitment.”
He also called on trade unions, professional bodies, and civil society organisations to actively advocate for and champion policies that protect workers’ well-being.
Dr Pelpuo revealed that the Ministry has established regional task forces to ensure the welfare of workers across all stages of life.
“May this summit be remembered not just for the documents we launched, but also as a powerful catalyst for a healthier, more productive, and resilient workforce for Ghana,” he added.
