The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP) has expressed deep sorrow following a devastating boat accident near Kete Krachi in the Oti Region that claimed the lives of 15 people, including 11 children.
The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) confirmed that fifteen people died in the tragic boat accident on Saturday, October 11, 2025.
According to the GMA, the boat, which was reportedly grossly overloaded, capsized while crossing a section of the Volta Lake.
The victims include children aged between two and fourteen years, along with four adults. Four others survived the disaster.
In a statement issued on Monday, October 13, the Ministry described the incident as a “national tragedy,” mourning the loss of so many lives, especially young children whose “promising futures were cut short.”
The Ministry extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, survivors, and the entire Kete Krachi community, assuring them of its full support through relevant state agencies.
“We stand in solidarity with the affected families,” the statement read, “and commend the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) and all emergency response teams for their swift intervention and the immediate commencement of investigations.”
The Ministry emphasised the urgent need for stricter enforcement of safety protocols in water transport, particularly the mandatory use of life jackets and adherence to regulations against overloading.
It also encouraged continued collaboration among stakeholders to strengthen accountability and prevent future tragedies.

MoGCSP called on boat operators, local authorities, and community leaders to prioritise passenger safety, with special attention to protecting children during water travel.
The Ministry prayed for strength and comfort for the grieving families and the Kete Krachi community during this difficult period.
