The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has commended its enforcement officers and journalists for their bravery and professionalism following an attack on its anti-galamsey taskforce during an operation in the Ashanti Region.

The incident occurred on 5 November 2025 at Dadwene, near Obuasi, during a nationwide crackdown on illegal mining and the sale of banned changfan machines, which continue to severely damage water bodies and farmlands across the country.

According to the EPA, armed men suspected to be guarding an illegal mining site confronted the enforcement team. A tactical withdrawal was ordered to safeguard all personnel. During the retreat, however, one of the Authority’s vehicles was involved in an accident, injuring three EPA officers and five journalists.

The journalists, drawn from Channel One TV, Joy TV, Adom TV and TV3, together with the injured EPA officers, are receiving comprehensive medical care.

EPA Chief Executive Officer, Professor Nana Ama Browne Klutse, praised the team for their courage.

“This attack is proof that enforcement is working. It will not deter us. We will continue to protect Ghana’s environment with renewed determination and stronger resolve,” she said.

Professor Klutse also expressed appreciation for the swift response from security agencies and the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology, which have been monitoring the situation and ensuring all affected individuals receive necessary support.

The Authority confirmed that investigations are underway to identify and prosecute the perpetrators.

The EPA urged the public to support lawful environmental enforcement efforts and remain united in the national fight against illegal mining.

“Protecting the environment is protecting Ghana’s future. The Authority remains resolute,” the statement concluded.
