Motorists navigating the crucial corridor toward the Airport traffic light faced massive delays this morning after a heavy-duty truck broke down across the road, causing severe traffic congestion directly in front of the Africa Regent Hotel.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday, December 11, 2025, brought vehicles to a crawl on the stretch just past the Spanner Bus Stop.

The truck’s position restricted the free flow of vehicles along the typically busy route leading to the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange and the airport area.

Police Intervene in Recovery Effort

The breakdown occurred during the critical morning rush hour, immediately impacting thousands of commuters, including those heading to the nearby Kotoka International Airport (KIA) and the numerous commercial hubs in Airport City and Dzorwulu.

Officers from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service were deployed to the scene to manage the gridlock, prioritise safety, and direct traffic flow around the obstruction while recovery teams attempt to clear the heavy vehicle.

Commuters reported heavy delays, with travel times on the affected segment ballooning from minutes to over an hour in some cases.

Drivers using the route are strongly advised to expect delays, exercise extreme patience, or immediately consider viable alternative routes, such as the back roads through Roman Ridge or Shiashie, until the obstruction is fully removed.

The road segment near the Africa Regent Hotel serves as a key artery linking major residential areas in the eastern and northern parts of Accra to the central business districts and the airport. Incidents like this underscore the fragility of Accra's road network, where a single obstruction on a major route can create bottlenecks that propagate across several adjacent roads.

The Police have assured the public that all efforts are being made to expedite the truck's removal to restore normal traffic flow as quickly as possible.
