Ghana is ranked the 7th safest place in Africa for travellers in 2026.
With a Global Peace Index (GPI) of 1.898, Ghana placed 3rd in West Africa.
Mauritius topped the list as the safest African nation in 2026.
The Southern African nation is renowned for its family-friendly environment, pristine beaches, and well-developed tourism infrastructure.
Another Southern African country, Botswana, home to sprawling wildlife reserves and the iconic Chobe National Park placed 2nd.
The country benefits from political stability and significant investment in sustainable tourism. Its Level 2 advisory also aligns with standard precautions for petty crime in urban areas, ensuring that visitors can explore natural attractions with relative confidence.
In 4th to 10th positions were Namibia, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Madagascar, Ghana, Zambia, Senegal and Liberia.
The GPI ranks countries using 23 indicators covering societal safety, domestic and international conflict, and militarization.
A lower GPI score reflects higher stability and peace, while the Safest Countries Index provides a normalized score for easier comparison.
