A 36-year-old taxi driver, Robert Atta Ernest, has died in a tragic accident on the Wenchi–Wa highway after a Kia Rhino truck loaded with wood fell onto his vehicle.

The incident occurred on Sunday, January 18, near Wenchi in the Bono Region.

Confirming the accident, Wenchi Municipal Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Divisional Officer II (DO2) Eric Boateng, told Adom News that a distress call was received around 1:20 a.m. from Sergeant Daniel Sarfo of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.

According to DO2 Boateng, the accident involved a Kia Rhino truck with registration number BW 210-20, transporting wood from Dormaa Ahenkro to Wa, and a Matiz Daewoo taxi cab with registration number BA 2878-13.

“When we arrived at the scene, we observed that the bucket of the Kia Rhino, which was fully loaded with wood, had detached from the truck and fallen onto the Matiz Daewoo taxi,” he explained, adding that the impact killed the taxi driver instantly.

The driver of the Kia Rhino truck has been taken into police custody and is assisting with investigations.

DO2 Eric Boateng expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and cautioned drivers, especially operators of heavy-duty vehicles, to ensure that their vehicles and loads are properly secured before embarking on journeys to prevent such tragic incidents.
