Anti-corruption campaigner Edem Senanu has urged the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dominic Ayine, to take seriously recurring claims of plea bargaining under the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Thursday, Mr Senanu said concerns over potential negotiations and backdoor deals have resurfaced, citing repeated mentions by senior members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“This issue has come up repeatedly, which suggests that all of us need to keep an eye on the space,” he said. “One would wonder why such high-ranking party members continue to raise issues relating to plea bargains. We should not be too quick to sweep this under the carpet.”
The comments follow AG Ayine’s dismissal of allegations that his office is striking deals with individuals under investigation. He insisted that all cases submitted to his office are being handled strictly in line with the law, describing claims of plea bargaining or backdoor arrangements as false.
Mr Senanu stressed that while the AG sits at the top of the hierarchy, developments at lower levels may not always come to his attention. He suggested engaging with the NDC General Secretary, who has raised the issue for a second time, to understand why the concerns persist.
