Ghanaian journalist and media literacy advocate Ismail Akwei has been appointed to the newly formed Alumni Leadership Council (ALC) of the McCain Global Leaders, an initiative of the McCain Institute.
The Alumni Leadership Council brings together 13 distinguished alumni from both the McCain Global Leaders programme and the former Next Generation Leaders programme, with representation spanning multiple regions of the world.
The Council was established to strengthen and energise the global network of changemakers connected to the Institute.
The 2024 McCain Global Leader, representing the Africa and Middle East region on the Council, will play a central advisory role in shaping the future of alumni engagement by curating innovative ideas to expand resources and support for alumni and contribute strategies to address pressing global challenges.
He joins a diverse inaugural cohort representing Ghana, El Salvador, Armenia, Tunisia, Germany, Sudan, New Zealand, the United States, Venezuela, Myanmar, Afghanistan, and Ukraine.

With his appointment, Ismail Akwei adds another international leadership role to his growing portfolio of work focused on media innovation, civic engagement, and global collaboration.
Ismail Akwei is the founding editor of globalsouthworld.com and the founder of the Media Literacy Development Foundation, a nonprofit organisation that advances democratic values among African youth through media and digital literacy.
