Ghana has marked the 2026 Commonwealth Day with a flag-raising ceremony at the forecourt of the State House, joining member states across the Commonwealth of Nations to commemorate the annual observance.
The event, held on Monday, March 9, was organised under the theme “Unlocking Opportunities Together for a Prosperous Commonwealth,” which calls for stronger collaboration, innovation and solidarity among member states to address global challenges and expand opportunities for economic growth, sustainable development and youth empowerment.

Addressing the gathering, the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to the core values of the Commonwealth, including democracy, peace, good governance, human rights, and multilateral cooperation.
He highlighted Ghana’s contribution to international peace and security and stressed the importance of continued cooperation among nations in addressing emerging global challenges.
Mr Muntaka noted that Ghana’s priority areas within the Commonwealth framework include climate resilience, digital transformation and youth empowerment, and called for collective action among member states to build a more prosperous and inclusive global community.

A message on behalf of the Head of the Commonwealth, King Charles III, was delivered by the United Kingdom High Commissioner to Ghana, Christian Rogg.
In the statement, King Charles urged Commonwealth countries to work together to safeguard the planet, support young people and build a more sustainable and prosperous future.
The message also highlighted the need for stronger cooperation in addressing pressing global issues such as climate change and sustainable development while harnessing the potential of the Commonwealth’s youthful population.

The Head of Mission for the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council in Ghana, John Obeng Apea, also emphasised the importance of strengthening economic partnerships among member states.
He described the Commonwealth as a unique voluntary partnership of nations united by shared values such as democracy, human rights and the rule of law, noting that trust, cooperation and innovation remain essential for advancing inclusive development.

As part of the commemoration, a photo exhibition was mounted to showcase Ghana’s engagement within the Commonwealth.
The ceremony was attended by members of the diplomatic corps, senior government officials, representatives of international organisations, religious and traditional leaders, as well as personnel from the security services.
