Ebenezer Wepari has been elected Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Russia branch after securing 51.2% of the votes in a closely contested rerun held on Monday, August 31, 2026.

The victory marks a significant comeback for Mr. Wepari, whose campaign was disrupted by a controversial suspension two weeks after the election process began. His reinstatement, following intervention by the party’s National Headquarters in Accra, paved the way for him to continue his bid for the chairmanship.

Running under the campaign slogan “Reform the Root, Reclaim the Rise!”, Mr. Wepari emerged victorious after a first round ended without a decisive winner, setting the stage for a tense final runoff.

His election is being seen as a show of grassroots support for his reform agenda and a mandate to lead the Russia branch into a new phase of political mobilisation.

In his victory remarks, Mr. Wepari thanked delegates and supporters for backing his vision and pledged to prioritise unity within the branch.

“I do not take this mandate lightly,” he said. “This victory belongs to every member of the NPP Russia branch who believes that our party is built on the principles of ‘Development in Freedom.’ My primary focus now is to bridge divides, foster genuine unity, and build a vibrant, proactive branch that is ready for the tasks ahead.”

The new chairman also praised members of his campaign team, for what he described as their “fire-on-fire” commitment and determination throughout the campaign.

Mr. Ebenezer said his administration would remain firmly grounded in the values and ideals of the NPP while working to heal divisions exposed during the highly competitive election.

Turning to 2028

With the internal contest now concluded, Mr. Wepari has signalled an immediate shift toward the party’s wider political agenda, particularly mobilisation ahead of Ghana’s 2028 general elections.

He pledged to strengthen the role of the diaspora in the party’s political activities and support efforts aimed at securing victory for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the 2028 presidential election.

“The work begins today,” he said. “We are fully committed to the vision of a stronger Ghana, and we will channel all our resources and energy toward securing a resounding victory for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.”

The election brings to an end a turbulent chapter in the NPP Russia Branch and places Mr. Wepari at the centre of efforts to rebuild cohesion, deepen grassroots engagement and intensify political mobilisation among party members in Russia.

For the branch, the new leadership begins with both a mandate to unite members after a divisive contest and the challenge of translating its renewed momentum into sustained activity ahead of the 2028 elections.
