Stakeholders in sports development and corporate bodies have been asked to assist the Obuasi Municipal Sports Development Office in their quest to develop lesser known sports disciplines in the Municipality.
Mr Bob Nkrumah, Chairman of the Municipal Football Association made particular mention of the efforts of the Municipal Development Officer, Miss Grace Assiam for her personal interest in supporting the development of the lesser known sports disciplines.
The Chairman made the call at Obuasi when he presented boxing equipment worth over 15 million cedis on behalf of the Ashanti Regional Sports Development Officer to the Obuasi Amateur Boxing Association at a ceremony at Obuasi.
He stressed that “the woman has a strong vision for the development of the lesser sports in this Municipality which needs further support”.
“Her vision to revive boxing and other games including lawn tennis, table tennis and indoor games in the Municipality is historic”, he said.
The equipment which included two punching bags, two boxing pads and a pair of gloves was donated by Mr Gideon Quartey, Vice-President of the Ghana Amateur Boxing Association through the instrumentality of Miss Assiam.
Mr Nkrumah said popular boxers such as Ankomah and Isaac Odumasi among others graduated from the Obuasi Boxing Club and urged the boxers to ensure the proper upkeep of the equipment.
He said since the boxers were to use the Junior Club House of AngloGold Ashanti as their training grounds, they should be disciplined and abide by the rules and regulations governing the place.
Miss Assiam said football was not the only sports to be developed in the Municipality and as such emphasis would be put on the lesser known sports like swimming, taekwando, volleyball and others to put the area on the limelight.
The Municipal Sports Development Officer commended Mr Quartey for the support and urged the beneficiary boxers to make good use of the equipment.
Baba Tiger, a heavyweight boxer said that measures are to be put in place to attract more young boxers for the Club to sustain its progress.
