An 18-year-old boy, Kofi Afriyie, has been jailed for two years with hard labour for stealing compact discs worth ¢150,000.
Afriyie, who pleaded guilty to four counts of stealing, unlawful entry, attempted suicide and escaping from lawful custody, was convicted on his own plea.
Police Chief Inspector Kippo Iddrisu Mahama, prosecuting told the court presided over by Mr Jacob Boon that the complainant, Mukaila Abubakar a trader lives in the same house with the accused who is a plumber at Asankare.
He said the complainant had for sometime noticed that someone had been stealing his compact discs from his room and reported to the landlord who advised him to be vigilant.
According to the prosecution, on February 26, this year, the complainant returned from work around 1730 hours only to find Afriyie in his room holding 14 compact discs and raised an alarm, which attracted other tenants and neighbours to the scene.
Chief Inspector Mahama said when the accused was asked how he had access to the room, he disclosed that he entered through the ceiling.
According to Inspector Mahama, the accused immediately climbed up the ceiling again and refused to descend despite all efforts to bring him down by the witnesses and managed to enter the next room.
He said some of the witnesses quickly entered the next room where they found him with a rope around his neck in a posture indicating his attempt to commit suicide by hanging.
The prosecutor said the accused who was then unconscious was immediately untied and rushed to the Juaso district hospital where he was admitted for a couple of days.
He said Afriyie was on April 4, arraigned before the Juaso circuit court where he was remanded, but he escaped from police custody two days later.
The accused was, however, re-arrested on the same day and charged with the offences.
