It was meant to be the citadel for orphans, a home for the abandoned but as it turned out, the Osu Children’s home, for now, is anything but safe for the under privileged children in the country.
Ghana’s ace investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas in one of his undercover investigations makes a heart wrenching revelation of the pain, terror, and reckless abandon children at the Osu Children’s Home endure in the hands of supposed care givers.
Disguised as Hajia Barikisu, a merchant from Mali, Anas reveals how some of the kids died, sometimes without the knowledge of the care givers.
Some of the children die en mass and could be buried in mass graves Anas Aremeyaw Anas opined.
It is possible, in fact easy to steal children from the home without the knowledge of the authorities, Anas told Joy FM’s Super Morning Show host Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah on Wednesday.
Again, disguised as Rev Abednego Akpabli, Anas struck a fine cord with the children and offered them the love and care they have been denied for the many years they have stayed in the home.
Little offences such as lying have the ultimate punishment of a one month solitary confinement, a place Anas describes as terror in Osu Children’s Home.
The home, thanks to the magnanimity of Ghanaians, doesn’t lack food, clothing and other necessities of life. One of the care givers on retirement said she would miss the abundant food supplies and actually recommended that the retirees be offered some of the food supplies as their ‘ex gratia’.
Anas said his work was not intended to discourage people from donating to the Home but to ensure that donors follow up to ensure their donations are put to good use.
Details of this seven months long investigation has been captured on video will be aired on MultiTV and other TV stations in the country.
According to Anas, authorities of the Osu Children’s Home and the Social Welfare Department have prevailed upon him not to publish the video.
The officials declined to speak to Joy FM when contacted.
